This Historian Kept Mummified Girls Because He Was Lonely

Back in 2009, locals started discovering that the graves of their loved ones had been defaced and, in most cases, completely dug up. However, the authorities had no clue who did this for almost two years. Graves continued to be desecrated and no one knew why. Russian Interior Ministry spokesman Gen. Valery Gribakin stated that one of their leading theories was that it was done by an extremist organization. However, evidence led them to a historian named Anatoly Moskvin.

Anatoly Moskvin, who was known as the ultimate expert on cemeteries in his city of Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, earned an advanced degree in Celtic studies, a culture whose mythology often blurs the lines between life and death. He was particularly obsessed with cemeteries and all things related to it. According to Moskvin, he had visited over 752 cemeteries in Nizhny Novgorod between 2005 to 2007. The historian had also come up with a documentary series of his travels and discoveries where he detailed notes on each one and delved into the histories of those buried there.

In 2011, police officers went to Moskvin’s apartment after they heard reports of Muslim graves being desecrated in Nizhny Novgorod. According to All That’s Interesting, a site for curious people who want to know more about what they see on the news or read in history books, the authorities discovered life-sized, doll-like figures throughout the apartment. At first, they thought these were antique dolls that wore fine and varied clothing. Some had makeup on their faces and wore knee-high boots. However, these were not just dolls -- they were the mummified corpses of human girls.

When interviewed, Moskvin said that he dug up graves of girls because he was lonely. He’d always wanted to have children but the Russian adoption agencies wouldn’t let him because he didn’t make enough money. The investigators also found that the bodies of the dead girls had music boxes or toys so they could produce sounds whenever the historian touched them. One doll had a piece of her own gravestone with her name scrawled on it inside her body. Another girl still had her hospital tag with the date and cause of her death.
