More and more people are becoming extremely cautious with AI. People are afraid not only of the fact that it can invade our privacy but the possibility that it may cost us our jobs. Rich Walker from the Shadow Robot Company explained that while AI can be programmed to have a conversation with people and reply in real-time with realistic answers, it will struggle to replace human to human communication. AI will also find it difficult to replace social interactions in the simplest scenarios like talking to a friend.
“There are some great examples of people developing AI systems that show what you might see as compassion. There are some AI chatbots that you talk to and they are just kind of friendly and helpful and supportive and nice to you. That is actually a really nice thing,” Walker said.
While there is a friendly AI technology, there could also be compassionless AI integrating into society. However, people shouldn't necessarily be afraid of AI but the companies that are utilizing it for their own goals. According to Express, an online site that covers the latest UK news, AI is mostly used by companies that actively do harm to society and the people within them.
“There is actually quite a good argument that there are cold compassionless machines that change the world around us in their own image. They are called corporations. We shouldn’t necessarily worry about AI as something that will come along and change everything,” he added.
Walker also argued that there’s a certain “kind of standard fear of A.I. that comes from science fiction.” This manifests either as some sort of an artificial construct that simply reshapes the world in its own image “and there is no space for humans in there” or a killing machine a-la Terminator.
