Artificial intelligence has changed since 2010, from merely making online payments to analyzing an individual’s personality in job interviews. Some of us might have noticed that machine learning is one of the most used technologies nowadays, specifically one type of machine learning called deep learning. Computers have benefited many industries as they are modeled after the way neurons work in the brain.
"Ten years ago, deep learning was not on anybody's radar, and now it's in everything," Pedro Domingos, a computer science professor at the University of Washington, said.
However, AI still faces several issues including spreading misinformation and the controversial facial-recognition software. Nonetheless, AI has indeed transformed our lives, bringing many issues with it. Here are some of them.
Facial recognition technology has been one of the most controversial developments in recent times due to concerns about privacy and accuracy. For instance, a US government study revealed extensive racial bias in almost 200 facial recognition algorithms. It reported that racial minorities are more likely to be misidentified than whites. Unfortunately, there are few rules in the country that govern how AI, in general, can be deployed.
2. Social networks
For years, many social networks have invested in AI and deep learning for several purposes. According to CNN, an American news-based pay television channel owned by AT&T's WarnerMedia, AI is responsible for the posts and ads you see on the sites, for removing bad content like hate speech, and for the ways your friends can be automatically tagged in photos. Yann LeCun, Facebook's chief AI scientist, stated that without deep learning the social network would be "dust."
AI has also entered the world of art. It is now being used to make paintings, musical compositions, and more, which are very similar to the output of humans. In 2018, an Old Masters-esque piece called "Edmond de Belamy" became the very first artwork produced by AI. The AI-generated art was created using a cutting-edge technique known as GANS.
