Lizzo Visits Second Graders in California after Viral Rendition of “Truth Hurts” Goes Viral

Lizzo has given new life to the topic of empowerment by breaking onto the scene as her charismatic, unapologetic self, inspiring so many people to not be afraid to do the same thing. In such a short period of time, Lizzo has become an inspiration and the face of women empowerment, and her song “Truth Hurts” has touched the hearts of many, including, it seems, elementary students in California.

According to ABC News, “Truth Hurts” was changed to become more child friendly by teacher Dorothy Honey Mallari, a teacher at Los Medanos Elementary School in Pittsburg, California. Her approach was that she wanted to incorporate some modern music into her annual classroom chant.

Mallari said she wanted to use something the kids “were familiar with and can really groove to.” Mallari says she opted to go for mainstream music because she values her students finding something for teachers like her to keep students engaged and “get hype on.”

Instead of Lizzo’s slightly more adult lyrics, Mallari switched up the lyrics but with the same message of empowerment behind it:

“Let’s be great, ‘cuz I know we are great… I just took an ELA test, turns out I’m 100% that smart, even when I’m feeling lazy. Yeah, I got math problems, that’s the student in me, buzz buzz then I solve them, that’s the worker in me.”

The kids sang that tune on November 5, and a video of it was then posted on the Pittsburg Unified School District Facebook page.

Lizzo eventually saw the clip and wrote on Twitter:

“This IS the best thing I’ve watched today.”

Lizzo also came to the school to meet the kids and Mallari could not be happier.

“This is so precious for me as a teacher… She hugged them like she knew them,” Mallari said.
