Live events like the Electronic Entertainment Expo and the PAX Unplugged 2019 are must-attend affairs especially if you’re an avid gamer. There’s just no comparative experience if you’re present there in real-time. Unfortunately, not everyone is capable of going to these conventions. This is why The Game Awards thought of a brilliant solution to appease their viewers worldwide by bringing the show to them.

Engadget, a website that is home for technology news and reviews, mentioned in an article that it’s introducing The Game Festival. This is an experimental event that will make demos for a dozen indie games available through Steam. It will run for 48 hours starting on December 12, and one might recognize some of the selections such as Nightdive’s System Shock remake and Glass Bottoms’ SkateBird.

If this experiment works out, it is expected that sooner, larger video game companies would use this opportunity to provide their fans a peek at upcoming games aside from their usual trailers. Meanwhile, The Game Awards is reported to be aired live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, and it is going to be hosted by Canadian game journalist and The Games Awards creator/producer Geoff Keighley.

A Special Announcement for Fortnite Fans

According to an article by GamesRadar, a website dedicated to providing news about gaming, Epic Games, the creator of the worldwide hit game Fortnite, has teased its fans on Twitter about a special announcement to be made at The Game Awards 2019. Since it wouldn’t be a tease if the Tweet mentioned anything else, a lot of players and followers of the game were left to just speculate about what the announcement could be.

Some thought that it is just a normal “Stay Tuned” announcement since Fortnite has been nominated for awards in several categories such as Best Community Support, Ongoing Game, and eSports Game of the Year. Meanwhile, Fortnite World Cup is also up for the award of Best eSports Event.

The game developer has announced that there is going to be Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 1, and it will run until February 2020 after it was earlier announced that it was to end in December. The extension was made to allow the gamers to prepare for all the new holiday-themed updates. The announcement that Epic Games is planning for The Game Awards 2019 may have something to do with the year’s holiday-themed Fortnite event.

Nintendo’s Teaser

Fans are excited to see which games will take home the different awards, but so far, there are gaming companies that are making things more exciting with all their teasers all over social media. Comic Book, an online source for video games and comic books, mentioned on their website that Nintendo of America released a tweet to advertise the show.

The first thing that will pop into the mind of every Nintendo fan is the fact that the gaming company has revealed the first DLC character from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate during last year’s show. Meanwhile, some fans expect to see Persona 5’s Joker to be unveiled during the presentation, but with one playable character left in the initial set of DLC for the game, fans of Nintendo’s fighting franchise are assuming that the final character is going to be announced during the broadcast.

Expect Trailers and Reveals

The Game Awards has become far more than an awards show. This event has been a very effective platform to make everyone’s jaw drop with their announcements and big reveals. Digital Trends, a technology news, lifestyle, and information website that publishes news, reviews, stated that in the past few years, the Oscar-like event has leaned more into an E3 style press conference.

The only difference is that the games featured are from a huge number of game developers, both AAA and independent. For example, the Game Awards 2018 featured the worldwide reveal of Far Cry New Dawn, a new Dragon Age game, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order, Mortal Kombat 11, and The Outer Worlds.

An Anecdote About the Man Behind the “Oscars of Gaming”

Based on an in-depth article written by The Washington Post, a daily newspaper published in Washington D.C., Geoff Keighley started his roots as a gaming industry insider when he was a little kid. Just like any other children, Keighley was fond of video games and receiving gifts from Santa Claus. But instead of writing to the jolly old man, the young Keighley wrote a letter to California-based Sierra Entertainment to inquire about how the games are made.

Ken and Roberta Williams of Sierra wrote back to him, and they told him that he seemed like someone who knew about a lot of video games. The generous couple sent him 10 floppy disks of games to test. Years after that, Keighley created The Game Awards, which the New York Times called “Oscars of Gaming.”
