The year 2019 has been a tumultuous one in cyberspace, from Twitter feuds to beauty community drama and the near-consistent mess that the Kardashian-Jenner clans get into now that the reality show of their lives has reached high demand. To be fair, being present online at all times exposes one to these messy things, what people know as viral moments. With the year winding down, let’s take a look at some of the most viral moments of 2019.
Kylie Jenner Singing “Rise and Shine”
While in an office tour of the Kylie Cosmetics HQ, Jenner sang “rise and shine” to her daughter, Stormi Webster. The single clip soon spawned remixes and photoshopped pictures of the celebrity. The meme promptly died when Jenner attempted to make a quick buck out of it by selling shirts printed with the same words.
According to weekly news magazine Time, the popularity of the clip was boosted by pop star Ariana Grande and many other celebrities recreating the hilarious moment. Grande posted a video of her belting out in the sing-song way in which Jenner did it, giving the meme more steam.
The Record-breaking Egg, @world_record_egg
Somewhat Kardashian-related, the record-breaking egg was another feat of camaraderie among internet denizens who are hitched for a long ride of laughter. According to American online media company Insider.com, this Kardashian-related viral moment began in early January in an Instagram account called @world_record_egg. Its goal was easy: beat out the most “liked” Instagram pic which, you guessed it, was a picture of Kylie Jenner. In just 10 days, the goal was achieved with the egg getting 53 million likes.
Storming Area 51
Truthfully, this one started off as a joke; everyone knew no one is allowed in Area 51 and that the story about supposed aliens living in the area is, in fact, completely farcical. But that’s the thing with memes; sometimes it’s easy for it to get a life of its own. It started out as a Facebook event by Matty Roberts, a 21-year-old college student from California who was simply bored, reports Best Life Online, a website that offers expert tips and news on health, food, sex, relationships, fashion, and lifestyle. From there, people breathed life into the joke and made headlines when they really did turn up around the area.

James Charles vs. Tati Westbrook
The beauty community is relatively niche. It’s usually just people within the community and those who are interested in it who are really updated in the ins and outs and the countless drama that ensues there. In this case, new-ish beauty guru James Charles got into a tiff with a community veteran and now ex-friend Tati Westbrook that was worth the attention of so many people. According to Best Life Online, the primary reason the drama became Twitter fodder was the “flurry of jokes that everyone—even those who can’t tell a concealer from a foundation—could relate and take part in.” Additionally, Charles’ debunking video right after also pushed the drama into mildly serious issue territory, especially since it made Westbrook look like a cyberbully right after.
The Jonas Brothers Reunion
Perhaps it’s the surprising quality of it that made everyone really more hooked to them or maybe they really made that much of an impact on the generation that’s entering into adulthood now because the Jonas Brothers reunion was definitely one for the books. Now all married, the brothers came back together after breaking up six years ago. In their new music video “Sucker,” they even featured their beautiful wives.

Predominantly on Twitter (as most viral things are), no one really knows exactly where the phrase “I’m baby” began, only that it was a phrase used to describe “a tongue-in-cheek evasion of everything: maturity, responsibility, seriousness.” The fact that Kirby’s chubby pink face is the universally accepted mascot for the meme adds a layer of hilarity in the meme.
Keanu Reeves Being Keanu Reeves
Reeves is the guy every girl wants to be with and the guy every guy wants to either emulate or hang out with; in short, Keanu’s had quite the time of his life this 2019, appearing in another “John Wick” movie (due to popular demand, obviously), in the video game Cyberpunk 2077, and in the new “Spongebob” movie playing as a sage sage. He also made himself more lovable (if that is even possible) with his now-viral “No, you’re breathtaking” response he gave to a fan while on-stage for a conference. Finally, he’s also found a new love in artist Alexandra Grant. Keanu’s overall wholesome and just downright amazing personality has endeared him to the hearts of many and, as a result, he became one of the most talked-about celebrities in 2019.
Woman Drinking Kombucha for the First Time
Brittany Tomlinson also proved this year that anyone has the ability to reach meme superstardom. She did it by simply recording herself drinking kombucha for the first time. Insider.com states that the meme gained popularity for the roller coaster of emotions that registered on Tomlinson’s face after trying the drink. Tomlinson eventually told the New York Times that her self-awareness of her face being a meme also prompted her to get “sick” of seeing herself.
Thanks to the internet, regular folks and even established superstars will continue to get their minutes of fame, for better or worse.
