In Marvel, it's not always enough to have a single possible future. It got to the point where characters kept on traveling through time, creating different scenarios to change the future, that Marvel began to number the possible futures for its heroes and villains to keep things on track.
Now, as part of the comics' 80th-year celebration, Marvel unveiled its one true future: Marvel 2099. Set 80 years from now, Marvel 2099 gives fans a look into the fate of their favorite heroes—including who the next Captain America will be and the arrival of Mjolnir's new owner.
The Future Is Collapsing
Marvel 2099 kicks off in this week's "Amazing Spider-Man #34," where 2099 Spider-Man Miguel O'Hara travels to the present time to look for Peter Parker. It was common for Parker to meet time travelers and alternate versions of himself, but O'Hara's revelation changed everything that is known about Marvel's future.
"Our scientists ... discovered an anomaly – something that was causing all this. It led them back here ... Just like it always does," Spider-Man 2099 says, according to CBR.com, the go-to source for comics news and discussions.
It adds that, based on O'Hara's explanation, all the other Spider-People and alternate realities are "fixed within an infinite multiverse. They are other Earths." However, Spider-Man 2099's future is set on the same Earth as Earth-616—to which Parker explains as a "superposition" in which both realities are fixed in time and O'Hara says is the problem.
Earth-616's constantly changing future is causing O'Hara's reality to collapse. Other heroes of the Marvel future are also trying to deal with these changes in the Marvel 2099 event, which CBR.com says is filled with a new generation of heroes like O'Hara.
The comic news source, however, noted that the effect of Spider-Man 2099's revelation on the Marvel Universe remains unclear (given that he disappeared before he could explain anything else). That uncertainty could lead to significant consequences, along with a number of questions and possibilities that only time will tell.
More Than Just a Possible Future
O'Hara traveling back to present-day New York to ask for help led to another shocking confirmation regarding one of the comics' characters: Captain America. It's sad to see Steve Rogers go, but even the serum that made him into the super-soldier he is won't be able to prevent his inevitable death.
This left fans thinking: who would become the next Captain America? In the possible 2099 future, Roberta Mendez is known to be the Rogers' successor but the revelation in the latest "Amazing Spider-Man" issue sets her as the one who will take the role in Marvel's true future, Screen Rant says.
Screen Rant is an online entertainment news website that provides the latest updates on movies, comics, video games, and television.
"The story is huge! And like a Spider-Man story should be, also really small, and about Peter Parker and his life, and everything that's going on," said "Amazing Spider-Man" editor Nick Lowe. "This isn’t an alternate timeline! This isn’t a What 'If?'…! This is the future of the Marvel Universe!"
There's only one way to interpret Lowe's comment: Mendez will be the Captain America of Marvel 2099. According to Screen Rant, the editor's use of the term "the Marvel Universe" is the clue to confirming the identity of the future Captain America since—based on Lowe's statement—it refers to the main '616' Marvel Universe.

Future God of Thunder
Aside from the future Captain America, Marvel 2099 events also feature another surprising return; this time in the form of the God of Thunder.
A preview of "2099 Alpha #1," which begins next week and teases O'Hara and Mendez's future in peril, foreshadows the arrival of the future God of Thunder. In a separate article, CBR.com reports Mjolnir—the Asgardian hammer—in the spotlight of the preview in which it is picked up and used by a mysterious character to rampage against the Public Eye police taskforce.
Fans may be surprised by Thor's 2099 successor with the horrific preview last Wednesday. On the final page, the preview illustrates what seems to be a deceased person hanging by strings tied to their arms.

It's already creepy as it is, but what makes it more morbid is the fact that Mjolnir is also tied around the person's neck—"almost as a warning to whoever comes across it," CBR.com says.
Unlike the revelations for the true Marvel future and Captain America's future identity, the mystery of Mjolnir's 2099 owner remains a puzzle and one of the secrets that will be explored in "2099 Alpha #1.
Other characters like the Punisher, Conan the Barbarian, Ghost Rider, the Fantastic Four, and Venom will be featured in one-shots that will expand the main Marvel 2099 story. The "Alpha" and "Omega" issues of the comics will serve as the event's bookends while the "Amazing Spider-Man" issues will be tied in as well.
