Getting a pet dog is like having a new family member at home. People should think about this thoroughly and extensively before making the decision. Research is essential at this stage, especially if the dog is not going to live with just one person. If you have kids and other people at home, then you’ll have to think twice before getting your specific breed of choice.

According to Dog Time, a website that provides information on everything about dogs, some dog breeds are not great as pets as they may not be good around children or people in general. Such dog breeds will be better off outside the house or in surroundings they are more used to.

There are also certain things you’ll need to check before getting a specific dog breed. If there are kids at home, then you better get a dog with the following characters to make sure that it will be great for your child.

Sturdy –kids could play a bit rough sometimes, so your dog should be very patient at all times. Safety is the number one rule, and your child and dog should both be safe. Some small dogs would not be the best choice if your child is a bit on the rough side.

Active – most kids would want a dog that is active and energetic. Children like to play, and your dog should also be like that. This could be beneficial for you as well since you already have your pet to play with your child so you can be free to do your tasks. If your family is on the active side, then your pet should also be the same.

Smart – the smarter your dog is, the better your chances of controlling it. Most dogs can be controlled, but when kids are around, it would be better if you can simply tell your dog “no” and it understands. This is mostly for safety purposes.

Friendly – some breeds are warmer and more open to people than others. Though dogs can have their own individual traits, it would be better to choose a dog that is friendly by nature. This can also assure you that your dog will be patient enough if you have a very stubborn and active child at home.

Best Dog Breeds as Pets

The PetMD, a website that caters to pet health and nutrition, lists down some of the best dog breeds that you can choose for you and your family. Although you can always get a different type of breed if you really prefer that, these are the most recommended ones, especially if you have a youngster at home.

Bulldog

This breed is very affectionate by nature, so you can expect it to be extra friendly to your child. It is sturdy enough for your child to play rough with it, and it gets along well with other pets. So if you have a cat at home, you don’t need to expect them to be fighting always. The only downside to this breed is that it’s not very active or energetic, so expect it to be just walking around. Also, if you are okay with drool on your floor, then perhaps this is the best pet for you.

Beagle

It’s small, easy-to-carry size makes it a fun dog to bring outdoors and carry around even at home. It is also very calm but can be very energetic. It is sturdy enough for rough kids, and this breed likes going out. If your family likes to hike or play on the grass, then you should check this breed out. Just be prepared to bathe and brush them as they shed often.

Collie

Have you ever seen the show “Lassie?” If you love it, then a collie might be best for your family. Originally bred as a herding dog, the collie has a demeanor that is predictable and friendly. It is very mild-mannered, although it can also be stubborn at times. If you can, have it trained first before you bring it home. Make sure that it is properly groomed all the time to keep that mane beautiful and shiny.

Labrador retriever

Perhaps one of the most popular breeds out there, the Labrador Retriever is perhaps the first choice for most families when choosing a house pet. It is friendly, loving, protective, and very sturdy. They are also very intelligent and easy to train. However, you’ll just have to make sure that it is provided with a lot of activities as they are very active by nature. Also, having a nice garden or a big lawn area is ideal so it can run around and exercise.

Golden retriever

This breed is very smart and loyal, so you’ll expect it to be very loving to its owner. They are not aggressive or too lazy, and they are patient enough to play even with rough kids. Just be prepared to take care of the coat through proper nutrition and grooming.
