Recent rumors surrounding Rockstar Games involve two titles that are said to be under development. Last week, the gaming company hinted at the development of the sixth installment of the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) franchise and now, an open-world medieval game is said to be in the works. The two games are also reported to be released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Project Scarlett, although exact details remain vague.
A Long Time Coming
Since its first release in 1997, the GTA franchise has made a name for itself and became one of the most established titles in the gaming industry. The latest installment was released in 2013 and it's longer been rumored that a game is set to follow it. However, there were no official reports at the time that indicated that GTA 6 was underway.
Now, fresh buzz suggests that the sixth installment could really be in development. According to British online news site the Mirror, Rockstar posted a new job listing earlier this month that seems to be related to the GTA franchise.
In the posting, the developer said it was looking for an Animation Systems Programmer that will help in developing "advanced animation systems for large open-world character-based games." The description sounds similar to the nature of GTA 6, even though it didn't explicitly say it was for the game.

The chosen candidate will team with programmers and researchers “who collaborate on pushing the boundaries of character animation on next-generation hardware,” Rockstar said in the job listing.
There have been many rumors that GTA 6 will be released soon, including a hoax report on a release date that Rockstar immediately denied. The false release date was set this year, but considering that 2019 is coming to an end, it’s more likely that the anticipated game will be released next year.
Moreover, Rockstar’s reference to “next-generation hardware” in its job posting hints at either the PS5 or Xbox Scarlett—which the Mirror says will both be launched in 2020. The listing came after Sony CEO Jim Ryan confirmed that they are already working with developers on games for the PS5.
While Rockstar’s hunt for an animation programmer has been greatly associated with the development of GTA 6, a now edited LinkedIn post points to another way.
Rockstar character artist Pawas Saxena’s post may have referred to “Project Medieval,” according to video game website GamesRadar.
“Project Medieval” is a title that was reported to be released years ago but was eventually shelved. Now, new rumors are saying that the game is back in active development. In his description of his current projects, Saxena revealed that he was “creating modular environment pieces with organic finish carefully following medieval architectural style.”
This information isn’t new, given that rumblings about “Project Medieval” have circulated before, but this is the first time that there is possible evidence that the game developer is working on the game.
This medieval game is said to focus more on sword fighting and one-on-one duels. GamesRadar noted that these claims should be taken with caution, but if they are true, “Project Medieval” would mark Rockstar’s departure from its heavy gunplay focus.
It would also be interesting to see how the “Red Dead Redemption” developer will fare in the genre against titles like Triternion’s “Mordhau,” Warhorse Studio’s “Kingdom Come: Deliverance,” and CD Projekt’s “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.”

Still in Muddy Waters
This new information on new games possibly in development comes at an exciting time as the nearing launch of new hardware to accommodate them. However, it’s still difficult to know what to make of them, especially since none have a solid background to support them.
What’s more, other information overlaps with these possibilities. For instance, the rumors for “Project Medieval” could likely be for the development of “Bully 2” (which has been making buzz in recent months).
But the launch of GTA 6 seems to be on the safer side after GTA 5 actor Steven Ogg (who voiced Trevor in the fifth installment) teased that the sixth installment will be released “soon.”
What’s interesting is the sudden surge of hiring talent in Rockstar, specifically in the next generation open-world genre. Aside from the listing linked to the GTA 6 development, the developer’s Indian office is also doing another round of recruitment drive.
According to the Daily Star, a local British newspaper, Rockstar India was also looking to fill in the position of Animation Systems Programmer along with other openings such as Animation Content Developer, Character Animator, and Facial Animator.
These positions point to the possible development of GTA 6 and while Rockstar India may be involved in the game, the Daily Star doubts that it will be leading the development.
But it doesn’t shake the fact that the strong hunt for new talent indicates that Rockstar India—and its head office—are probably working on something. That, or they’re just staffing up for a new Rockstar Games Project.
