How to Achieve a Healthy Aging Process

It is no shame to want to look your best. In fact, everyone desires this! It boosts self-esteem that impacts mental and emotional well-being and ultimately on the quality of life. Slowing and reversing aging is just normal and not superficial. Everyone deserves to look and feel good.

 

Areas Deserving Attention and Intention in Aging

The particular challenge confronting older people is the sharp number of changes and transitions that start to happen. Balancing and reinventing in passing through these changes merit utmost consideration. Look deeper with great intent on the following areas to adapt healthfully during the process of aging.

Physical health is the most obvious area as many physical changes occur as people age. An average of 5% of muscle mass is lost every 10 years after the age of 35. Loss of muscle is associated with loss of physical energy, a tendency to gain extra pounds, increased susceptibility to ailments, and accelerated aging. Maintaining muscle mass slows down the aging process so get moving and do those daily walks.

Mental health issues will likely occur when other physical health conditions exist. A study showed that almost a quarter of the 600,000 older stroke patients suffered from depression. Be aware of signs like lethargy, loss of appetite, and weight loss as any of these can be indicative of poor mental health. Talk to healthcare providers or support groups to cope and recover from setbacks.

Social health is necessary to survive. Human beings have the fundamental need for inclusion in relationships. Studies reveal that when the need for social relationships is not met, a corresponding mental and physical decline occurs. Over time, unmet social needs take a serious toll on well-being. Take action and start volunteering on worthwhile endeavors. Join clubs and don’t forget to have a cup of coffee with friends regularly.

The occupational well-being felt while working provides a sense of purpose and satisfaction. There is a natural, inherent fulfillment when work is completed. This goes away after retirement. In place of this, do a hobby, a craft or a part-time work to regain the feelings of achievement and pleasure.

As age advances, brains become idle with fewer opportunities to learn and think critically. This should not happen. Older people have freer time to choose what to learn to exercise the brain. Learn a new language, do crossword puzzles, play games. Mental exercise will do the brain a lot of good.

The most important factor in healthy aging is cultivating a positive outlook in life. Attitude and ability to cope are good predictors to achieve this. Below are a few caveats to attain and maintain the long-sought ageless beauty.

1. Beware of one-product-fits-all claims. No such product exists. Different products have different reactions to individuals. Refrain from using over-the-counter cosmetics but use instead clinically tested products tailored to individual needs.

2. Start anti-aging regimens early. Although aging is a natural part of life, anti-aging products and treatments should start at an early age to combat aging. Invasive treatments are the best options whenever possible. In some cases, surgical treatments (i.e. facelift) may be the better choice.

3. Pollution and toxic fumes contribute to aging signs like wrinkles and age spots. Try not to smoke or if already into the vice, cold turkey quit!

4. You are what you eat. Strive to eat a healthy and well-balanced diet to appear younger looking.

Recipe for Healthy Aging

There will be times of joy and stress as one ages. It is important to build resilience and find healthy ways to cope with aging challenges. This ability will help make the most of the good times and keep perspective when times are tough. Articulate and express emotions honestly. Do not take things for granted but accept things that cannot be changed with dignity and humor.

A key ingredient in the recipe for healthy aging is the consistent ability to find purpose and joy in life. As age increases, life changes, and things that once gave life meaning get lost. Do not be sidetracked and keep on moving forward. Later life may prove more exciting if you let it.

One of the greatest challenges of aging is maintaining a support network. Staying connected and getting around is difficult once older. A lot of factors set in to take away family members and friends like illness, retirement, career changes, and many more. More people are lost as one gets older.

It is important to find the means to connect to others. Keeping a social life can positively impact on health as one gets older. Keep a company of friends to buffer against loneliness, loss, or sickness. Find ways to get out of the house and socialize.

Aging should not be equated with discomfort and disability. Although illness is unavoidable, physical changes associated with aging can be alleviated by eating right, exercising, and taking care of self. Keep the brain sharp and active. Maintain creativity to prevent cognitive decline and memory lapses. The more social, the more the brain sharpens, and the more benefits garnered.

Science theorized that the passage of time cannot be altered but the rate of aging can be slowed down and enjoyed. Laugh as much as you can and sit back to enjoy life!
