Marvel Studios have continued their winning ways at the box office with one hit movie after another, the latest, of course, were “Avengers: Endgame” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.” Fans of the American film and animation studio were particularly sad after the “Avengers: Endgame” hit the cinemas because most of them believed that it will also be the end in the movies for its popular and beloved superheroes culled from the comics.
But according to a report by The Beat, a website that publishes about comics, video games, and films, Marvel Studios surprised everyone after they announced the launch of their upcoming film titled “The Eternals.” Diehard Marvel comic book fans were quick to rejoice over the news but they were also concerned about how Marvel will coherently adapt the series into a two-hour film.
Film producer and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige was confident that “The Eternals” will be a gem for the Phase 4 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He believed that something special can be made about the said series, but fans were skeptical since the series is known to have a shaky foundation. Marvel Studios identified the challenges of adapting the comic book series into three categories: concepts, characters, and the comics they come from.

Cast and Characters
“The Eternals” movie adaptation is reported for a November 2020 release. Polygon, an American video game website that publishes news, culture, reviews, and videos, mentioned that the upcoming Marvel film will include Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden, and Salma Hayek.
If you’re not a comic book nerd, you might find yourself wondering what exactly is this new group (at least as far as you are concerned) of super-powered characters. Insider, a website that reports news about life and business, shared that the upcoming movie will feature characters with superhuman abilities such as super-strength and the ability to fly.
Madden, who was known as Robb Stark from the hit TV series “Game of Thrones” will play the role of Ikaris. He is one of the leaders of the Eternals and he was first introduced in the comics as an undercover human on Earth with the name Ike Harris. Some of the original characters from the comic books had been gender-swapped like Ajak, who will be played by Salma Hayek in the movie version.
In the second issue of “The Eternals,” Ajak was shown being worshipped by the Incans and buried deep in his tomb until Ikaris awakened him. Hayek expressed her excitement about the gender-swapped role. “I'm so excited to join the Marvel family as Ajak, the mother of all Eternals. It used to be the father of all Eternals, but girls...this is OUR time!!!!” she wrote on Instagram.
Who Are the Eternals?
Jack Kirby’s original idea tells the story of a universe populated by space gods, who are called the Celestials. These characters were mentioned in the “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie, but the movie failed to mention that they also created three new species on Earth, which are humans, Deviants, and Eternals.
In an article published by Den of Geek, a website that features entertainment news, it was explained that the Eternals are the creatures sworn to protect humanity from the violent nature of the Deviants. In the comics, they said that the pantheons known to humanity were all born after humanity made contact with the Eternals.
These powerful creatures are also immortal but they are not immune to endless conflicts, one against the Deviants and the other with the Celestials, who vowed to return one day and judge all their creations. Yes, it might sound like an allegory to a certain religion that we have today, but the Celestials are different in a way that they believe that there is a due date for the creatures they made.
The Marvel Mythology
Marvel Comics has a very complicated universe but one thing certain us that the different aspects of the Marvel Universe originated from Eternals mythology. If you have watched the movies “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “Avengers: Infinity War,” you will most likely be familiar with the planet called Knowhere, which was actually a hollowed-out skull from a dead Celestial. “The Eternals” also tell the origins of Thanos, who was actually a son of an Eternal.
“The Eternal” comics showed how the Eternals helped Titan to become a haven of science, where technology was used to create a paradise filled with peace and goodness, that is, until Thanos unleashed his wrath after he was rejected by the Titans and got exiled. The sinister villain came back to Titan with an armada and wiped its existence. After that, he went out into the galaxy to satiate his thirst for violence. But, despite the clear connection between Thanos and the Eternals, it is still not known if the Marvel villain will be back on the big screen together with the new superheroes.
