If you’re a hardcore fan of the Star Wars films, there’s a huge chance that you have picked up a Star Wars book at least once in your life. Since its story tells of the journey of space rebels from a galaxy far, far away, there are tons of materials to read and watch in order to follow their quest to achieve the peace and balance between the forces of evil and good.
Several movies and animated series have been made in the past, but they are not quite enough to cover the stories that made Star Wars interesting in the sci-fi community. This is why Star Wars novels are your best options if you wish to dive into its expanded universe, which was set during, between, and after the original and subsequent films.
Although most of these expanded universe books were declared non-canon and rebranded as “Legends,” iand generally regarded as outside the theatrical Star Wars films, these books were still produced by George Lucas. They were only considered as part of the Star Wars expanded universe after Disney acquired the rights to the film’s franchise, according to Book Riot, the largest independent editorial book site in North America.
Now that the fans are waiting for the launch of the latest movie, here are some of the Star Wars novels one can read while waiting for its launch on December 20.
“The Rise of Skywalker” will be the third installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy. The movie will take place after the events of “The Last Jedi” which was launched in 2017. The latter received a lot of mixed reviews from its fans because major characters from the original franchise experienced drastic events that were very essential for the course of the Star Wars theatrical series.
The Last Jedi left its fans wondering about the fate of the rebels now that the remaining Jedi master is gone. That’s where Rebecca Roanhorse’s new novel titled “Resistance Reborn” can fill in some of the events that happened between The Last Jedi and the upcoming “Rise of Skywalker.” The well-written novel adventure will make fans excited about how well the upcoming movie will turn out.
Readers will meet the surviving Resistance members after their almost impossible mission during the Battle of Crait, and Roanhorse will also lead us to Dameron’s and Organa’s heartwarming dialogue. The novel will enable readers to know what’s going on with Leia’s exhausted mind, and the other heroes’ perspectives as they try to win against the First Order, which is now led by Supreme Leader Kylo Ren.

Written by Christie Golden, “Dark Disciple” is a canon novel that features a former Sith apprentice named Asajj Ventress. It was published in 2015 and it follows Ventress’ path as she turns into a bounty hunter whom the Jedi Council has decided to be a partner for Jedi Quinlan Voss. Together, they are assigned to bring down Count Dooku, who is later killed by Anakin Skywalker after Palpatine manipulates him to do so.
This is the perfect novel for those who love a good anti-romance story also filled with action. Ventress is one of the fiercest characters from the expanded universe and a very interesting one since her character experiences much development throughout her life.
The Thrawn Trilogy
Many fans from the Star Wars theatrical series might not be familiar with Grand Admiral Thrawn’s existence, but those who have read about his story in the expanded universe novels know how this fictional character strongly commanded the Empire to obliterate the Rebellion.
Hobby Lark, a website created for hobbyists, shared that The Thrawn Trilogy was created by Timothy Zahn. This three-part tale tells of how the Empire had one of its greatest commanders on the fleet. After Thrawn, a blue-skinned military genius becomes its new leader. The trilogy also introduces fans to the other popular character from the expanded universe, Mara Jade, who was once a personal assassin of Emperor Palpatine and later became Luke Skywalker's wife.
Leia: Princess of Alderaan
One of the most beloved and famous characters from the Star Wars series is Princess Leia Organa. Claudia Gray’s novel about the fierce princess who turned into a general of the Resistance forces tells the story of her teenage years. Before she met the scruffy Nerf herder, Han Solo, and her long lost brother, Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa had her own battles as she tried to be a worthy heir to the throne of Alderaan.
However, the young princess in Gray’s novel is still unaware of her true identity. She then notices that her parents are acting secretive, so she takes the initiative to find out the reason for her parents' odd behavior. This novel will also explain how General Leia and Vice Admiral Holdo gained each other's respect and trust.
