Labrador’s Tongue Almost Cut in Half As It Got Stuck in a Rubber Ball

Couple Helen and James Hartley were traumatized to find that their beloved dog’s tongue was almost cut in half after it got stuck in a rubber ball dog toy. The couple then issued a warning to the public and this was then shared by the British newspaper Daily Mail UK.

Over the course of one week, the couple noticed a red line in the tongue of their pet and such turned into bruising. They also said that it began to form plaques on top and smelled foul. Eventually, the red line turned necrotic and formed two giant slits on both sides of the animal’s tongue. This is when they quickly took the dog to Foxhall Veterinary Clinic. The nurses also noticed the swelling in the dog’s tongue and it was soon found out that the ball toy critically restricted the blood flow in her tongue. It was “really traumatic for us all,” Helen said.

During Poppy’s surgery, the dead tissue in her tongue was removed and then it was stitched back together. Helen thanked everyone in the clinic who looked after their pet. “We couldn’t have asked for a more dedicated team,” she narrates.

A spokesperson from the clinic also said that they were surprised how the dog ate and drank the moment she woke up after the surgery. They likewise said that they were happy to know that Poppy’s tongue is almost healed now. The stitches in the dog’s tongue will soon dissolve, they added. The clinic has also advised the couple to bring Poppy for daily check-ups until her full recovery. The pet was also given medication for the swelling. Staff at the Foxhall Veterinary Clinic said that they have grown attached to Poppy during her recovery and said that they will miss her visits.

Couple Helen and James Hartley warned the public of the danger of leaving their dog unattended with toys regardless of how innocent these toys may seem.
