Sony announced last month that the sequel to their action-adventure survival horror game, The Last of Us, will be launched on February 21, 2020. But fans would need to wait a little longer as the company amended their announcement, saying that The Last of Us Part II is now scheduled to arrive on May 29, 2020.

Business Insider, an online platform that offers the latest business, celebrity, and technology news across America, reported that the highly anticipated follow-up to one of the most popular PlayStation games will be delayed for valid and necessary issues.

Game developer Naughty Dog also confirmed that the sequel will have no multiplayer mode, but assured fans that the delay in the game’s release is meant to make it even better.

The Decision

As reported by Forbes, an American business magazine, the game studio shared a statement where they explained that creators reached a point where they have to decide whether they need to make a compromise on some parts of the game or delay its release to get everything right. The game’s director, Neil Druckmann, said that they decided to follow the latter.

Druckmann and his team believed that this decision will enable them to create an even greater game. “This new release date allows us to finish everything to our level of satisfaction while also reducing stress on the team.” Even though the game’s delayed release is disappointing news for fans who have been waiting for the sequel for the longest time, industry insiders said this could prove to be good news for both the game developer and the gamers.

Delayed for Good Reasons

This delayed launch will benefit the game developers. Druckmann admitted that this will decrease the incidents of crunch times, burnout, and terrible working situations working on the game. It is said that the whole game industry is suffering from these issues as a result of trying to get new games to market at the soonest possible time.

“While we’re relieved that we won’t have to compromise our vision, we’re disappointed that we weren’t able to avoid this exact situation,” Druckmann wrote. He added that he wished that they have foreseen the amount of polish that their company needed to make the game perfect. However, the size and scope of the new game overwhelmed the game developers.

The initial release of the game in February next year is also an incredibly busy month for the video game industry. The whole first quarter of 2020 is said to be filled with new releases from different companies, and it’s going to get busier as we get closer to the New Year.

The May 2020 release date will put The Last of Us Part II just a month after the release of Cyberpunk 2077, and the only major release in May is Marvel’s Avengers on May 15.

What’s in Store for Gamers?

The delay means that fans will need to wait a little longer before they can play Ellie and Joel’s new story, and it also raises an interesting question. The American video game and entertainment media website, IGN, mentioned in an article that the release of this game could also affect the other PlayStation 4 exclusive, Ghost of Tsushima.

Insiders said the Ghost of Tsushima never had a definite release date, and it is yet to be confirmed if it will also be playable in PlayStation 5 consoles. The announcement regarding The Last of Us Part II is believed to be a strategy by Sony where they plan to launch Ghost of Tsushima after the release of the sequel of The Last of Us.

But with the launch of the PS5 consoles during the holiday season, it makes the gaming industry wonder about the fate of Sucker Punch’s new and mysterious video game. The action-adventure stealth game, Ghost of Tsushima, is also assumed to be having a late summer or early release in North America. This is because game experts believe that Sony doesn’t want to be a part of the Early 2020’s jam-packed video game releases.

The Story of the Last of Us Part II

According to Business Insider, the video game will feature a world that was destroyed by an infection mold that turns people into zombie-like monsters. Fans of the game will be delighted to know that the main character, Ellie, will be featured as a 19-year-old, who has gained more skills five years after the conclusion of the first game.

This new set of skills of hers will be used against the vicious gangs and infected monsters around her. There will also be a budding romance for Ellie, as she falls in love with Dina, a woman living in her community. Aside from the new love interest for Ellie, the video game sequel will add new enemy types where guard dogs can track the character’s scent while new infected monsters have poisonous attacks.
