It’s Halloween season! Aside from the pumpkin spice lattes and trick or treats, the month of October is also a great time to enjoy scary movies and video games. However,  as much as we love the jump scares and predictable plot lines from scary movies, there is nothing more gratifying than having a hundred percent control on the plotline of a horror video game.

Real gamers know that great video games don’t always have the best graphics and sound effects. Sometimes it only takes a great plot, and when it comes to horror games, they should be able to scare the hell out of the player. The following video games are some of the most frightening in the genre. They are great to play with the room lights out and with headphones on so that the player will be better immersed in the world full of scares and surprises.

Blair Witch

The video game adaptation of the groundbreaking movie “The Blair Witch Project” released in 1999 is set two years after the events that unfolded in the film. The Dallas Morning News, a daily newspaper serving the Dallas-Fort Worth area in Texas, reported on their website that the Blair Witch video game brings the players into an original story where they can assume the role of a former police officer who will be searching for a missing nine-year-old boy.

Gamers will also enjoy the unsettling Black Hills forest where they will find a video camera that contains footage, which will be helpful in solving puzzles. The Verge, a website that publishes articles about anything tech-related, said that the scares in this video game are rooted in the fear of being hopelessly lost in the woods.

Silent Hill

Cultured Vultures, an online journal that features contemporary writing and literary and entertainment reviews, stated that Silent Hill is hailed as arguably the greatest horror video game of all time. Its sequel has also proven that it can get even better. Too bad for those gamers who refuse to play Silent Hill because of its being “old school” with its blurry aesthetic.

Set in the foggy rural town of Silent Hill, the game features an everyman named Harry Mason who is searching for his missing adopted daughter. He soon learns that the town is populated by a cult that conducts a ritual to bring back to life a god they worship. Mason also finds out the true origin of his daughter, and it is up to him to rescue her and survive the town.

Resident Evil 2

The Resident Evil franchise is very popular for all valid reasons. It has the perfect combination of scares, action, and great characters with backstories. PC World, a website that publishes articles about tech, stated that Resident Evil 2 is one of the more neglected Resident Evil entries despite being perhaps the best installment in the series.

The survival horror game was created by Capcom, one of the giants in the gaming industry. Resident Evil 2 features Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield, two controllable characters, who must make their escape from Raccoon City and its horde of zombies. Players will need to explore, solve puzzles, and fight off the undead and the bad guys. Kennedy and Redfield have their respective storylines and challenges, making Resident Evil 2 a two-in-one game.

Luigi’s Mansion 3

Luigi’s Mansion 3, at first glance, may not look like your typical horror video game. But it does have a lot of elements that will scare the uninitiated. The game is a great choice if you want to play something light yet something of a classic for Halloween. Still much a part of the Super Mario universe, Luigi's Mansion 3 is filled with colorful and unforgettable characters, the only difference is that it has ghosts as the antagonists. This video game lets players act like a ghostbuster.

This is also a great pick for those with little kids who want to play a horror game for Halloween. Luigi’s Mansion 3 engages the player in some light puzzle-solving game and lets them explore a large area that includes hotels and retail shops where ghosts are hiding.

Meeting Lisa

This video game has the most talked-about demos, according to reports. The game has a thick and heavy atmosphere where gamers could be left in anguish and shocked. The feeling of dread and sorrow clings to the player. Gamers will have to creep around a dark house where the feeling of terror slowly rises as the end of the game nears.

To finish the game, players will have to meet the terrifying Lisa, the ghost of a woman murdered in the house. She appears suddenly in the center of the screen, and before you know it, you are killed. And that’s after having to endure the unnerving presence of ghosts during the course of the game.
