Sweet 72nd Anniversary Celebration of Elderly Couple Goes Viral

A couple at the Grace Manor Care Center in Burlington Colorado had the internet in tears when a clip of them celebrating their 72nd anniversary went viral.

According to Yahoo News, which delivers the latest news and current affairs, the man in the video is Leonard Matties and the woman is Shirley Matties, his wife. The event was made extra special because Shirley suffers from dementia, a medical condition that affects a person’s memory. Despite this, the nursing assistant assigned to them, Ardis Behrendsen, went out and bought a dress for Shirley to wear so they could have a small celebration of the milestone.

It was truly a soft, heartbreakingly sweet moment, one that was easily captured in video and a small album on Facebook, with the permission of the family, of course.

Carolyn Martell, one of the couple’s seven children, came over to visit them on their anniversary. She told Yahoo News that what made the moment special was how Shirley, despite suffering from dementia, was able to recognize Leonard, who himself was elated during the moment.

Behrendsen can be heard saying in the video, “Look, she’s a beautiful bride today,” to Leonard, who could only agree softly by replying, “Yes, she is.” The tender moment is captured and treasured by the hospital, most especially Behrendsen, who felt the need to do something for the couple in their momentous celebration.

"Her daughter has been talking about their anniversary, and ever since I started in the nursing field, I have done these types of things," Behrendsen tells Yahoo. "I never really had to think about it. I just got online and ordered her a dress. [Shirley and Leonard are] just like all my other patients... They turn into my family, too."

Behrendsen adds that after the transformation Shirley went through, she noticed that it was like “her mind just came back.”

Carolyn agrees with her, saying, “Mother loved being dressed up. She sparkled. That day, we thought she talked better and she seemed so happy.”
