Huge Gelatinous Orb With Thousands Of Baby Squid Found in the Norwegian Sea

 

Last October 5, Ronald Raasch, Nils Baadness, and their team-members from the research group REV Ocean were swimming back after visiting a WWII shipwreck. But instead of coming back to the coast, they remained in the ocean after discovering a mysterious shape floating 17 meters below the surface.

The divers were confused about the massive orb because of the tissue-like material inside it. In the footage, Ronald and Nils are seen curiously circling the enormous ball. Upon lighting their flashlights, they see swarms of tiny, maggot-like creatures wriggling around inside the orb. Apparently, this mysterious object was a giant squid egg sac, carrying thousands of baby squids. This giant sac is rarely seen because they sink toward the bottom of the ocean floor where it is difficult to reach.

According to All That’s Interesting, a site for curious people who want to know more about what they see on the news or read in history books, the researchers tweeted out the full video of the encounter with a caption: “#Mysterysolved! Captain Baadnes & Ronald Raasch discovered this giant gel ball while diving in Orstafjord, which is actually an eggmass of 10-armed.”

This isn’t the first time marine researchers discovered these giant jelly nurseries. Danna Staaf, a squid expert, encountered a 13-foot-wide red flying squid egg mass while diving in the Gulf of California in 2015. In her study, she reported that the giant egg sac serves as a protective shield for the squid embryos inside it. This protects the baby squids from predators and parasites. “We know that mama squid has these special glands in her body that make jelly and she mixes that jelly with her eggs in some way,” Staaf explained.

Staaf believes that the elastic nature of the egg sac helps in maintaining enough space between each squid embryo so that each egg can get enough oxygen. This supports the development of baby squids.
