The Most Popular Sports in the World Today

Sports were previously considered as merely a hobby or a leisure activity that no one would make a career of it. But as more and more people become avid followers, athletes of the different sporting events have become celebrities in their own rights as their careers soared to greatness.

Here are some of the sporting events that have become wildly popular among fans around the world.

Baseball

Although the origin of the game is still not clear even today, one thing is undeniable: it is an all-time American favorite. List25.com, a website that provides interesting list of things, mentioned that the popularity of baseball has spread to other countries as well. After the first World Series happened in 1903, it has grown to become a major sport in many parts of the world.

Golf

For non-fans, golf might look like a very dull sport to watch, but it has an estimated global following of 450 million people, according to World Atlas, an online resource for educators, students, and people who are curious about the world. Golf is also said to be widely popular in Western Europe, East Asia, and North America.

Rugby

This sport is a very violent one and requires athletes to have the physical strength, as the two opposing teams consisting of 15 players each would carry, kick, or pass the ball across the end line to gain points to win. Rugby originated from the United Kingdom where it has an estimated following of 400 million people. Its influence has also spread from the UK to other British colonies such as Australia and New Zealand.

Volleyball

Volleyball was invented by William G. Morgan in 1895 in the US, borrowing elements of basketball, tennis, handball, and baseball. and it soon reached Western Europe before the rest of the world caught on. Today it has 900 million fans worldwide and one of the favorite collegiate sporting events.

Tennis

Tennis has an estimated 1 billion fans all over the globe. There are different versions of the sport throughout history and is believed to have been played by ancient civilizations including Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks. It is said that the sport originated from England while the United States adopted it and is now played or followed by around 17 million Americans.

Cricket

The sport is believed to have originated from the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries. Because of its popularity, 18th century England made it a national sport. Although its popularity is limited to countries like India, Cambodia, Pakistan, and their neighbors today, cricket still has a huge following—2.5 billion in fact.

Football/Soccer

Its four billion fans around the world are proof that football or soccer is the most popular sport in the world. The sport originated in China in the second century, but its modern version began in England, where it became quite popular that it attracted a huge deal of fans worldwide mainly because its mechanics is very easy to understand even for non-sports fans.

Basketball

There probably isn’t a single sport that has created as many celebrities out of its players as basketball. These superstars are recognizable not only in the US where the sport originated but in most parts of the world. Names like Stephen Curry, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Larry Bird, and Dr. J among others have become household names despite the fact that for now, it “only” has 825 million fans worldwide.
