Uber Passenger Falls Asleep In London, Gets Slapped With £1,450 Bill Upon Waking Up

Chris Reed, a DJ known as Plastician, fell asleep in a cab after a night out in London, writes Neil Murphy of British newspaper Mirror. He was driven near Sleaford, Lincolnshire, a hundred miles away from his destination in south London. The incident is said to have occurred just past midnight on Sunday morning as the DJ attempted to get home from Fulham in west London to Croydon.

Reed woke up in the Midlands with a £1,453.86 ($1,810) bill for the 300-mile round trip. He posted his experience on social media to demand a refund from Uber, claiming that the ride-hailing firm failed to accommodate his request. On Twitter, he wrote, “Spent this week trying to get answers from @Uber as to how my driver managed to drive me halfway up the UK while I dozed off thinking I was headed from Fulham to Croydon. Woken up in the Midlands! Didn’t hear a peep from my driver. £1453.86. 5 1/2 hrs on surge price x2.”

An Uber employee confirmed that Reed’s home address was on the booking when he called, Reed added. “They are now denying this yet have no proof that I ever entered an address in Sleaford - a destination I have never been to in my LIFE.” Reed advised people not to drink and drive. They should also avoid drinking and booking an Uber, as they may suffer the same ordeal as Reed. The DJ continued, “If I am forced to pay this ridiculous fare in its entirety then I at least hope it saves people reading this from the same happening to them."

This is not the first time Uber has been accused of overcharging its customers. A nurse who came from a night out in Liverpool was initially charged £37 ($46) and upon waking up, Uber quoted a £111 ($138) bill for the trip. She explains, “I rang my friend and she was just as shocked as me, she agreed to pay half because the money had already come out of my account.”
