Mom Gives Toddler Her Phone and Purchases A Sofa From Amazon

 

Mom-of-two Isabella McNeil was browsing for a new couch on her phone when her two-year-old daughter Rayna called, “Mama, phone. Mama, phone,” writes Luke Matthews of British newspaper Mirror. Isabella handed Rayna her phone and, unbeknownst to her, Rayna accidentally ordered a £350 ($435) three-piece sofa from Amazon. A few days later, Isabella received a notification stating that the sofa was on its way. 

Shocked, Isabella thought she ordered the piece of furniture in her sleep until she remembered lending her phone to Rayna, who had access to the Amazon app. The two-year-old pressed the 1-click "buy it now" button, enabling her to make a power purchase, according to Monica Garske of NBC-owned-and-operated television station NBC San Diego.

Isabella frantically attempted to cancel the order. But it was too late, as a sofa arrived on her doorstep packed in a huge cardboard box. As Rayna inspected the sofa, her mother learned that restocking and shipping it back to Amazon would cost under £150 ($186). Isabella turned to social media to resell the sofa. She captioned, “Brand new in box. Ordered it by mistake, my toddler actually did…darn buy with 1 click on Amazon. Anyway, it’s more of a hassle to ship back, so I’ll take a loss.”

She reflects, “Now I know it’s really dangerous and [I need] to make sure the Amazon app is closed before my daughter takes the phone. It’s just so easy.” Fortunately, Amazon offered Isabella a full refund, and gave her the option to either keep or donate the sofa. The 1-click feature was also disabled on her Amazon account. While Isabella appreciated the funny side of her story, she hoped that her experience would serve as a warning for other parents who lend their phones to their children to make them happy. 

Isabella advises, “Make sure all of the apps are closed, make sure your passwords are fingerprint-locked, make sure they don’t know your number password, because kids are a lot smarter than we think.”
